What is a Geothermal heating system, and how
does it work?
You might be surprised to find that the most encouraging solution to sky high
energy costs may be buried right under your home. Superefficient geothermal
system provides ultra quiet, clean heating, while reducing your energy costs
over 50%. A geothermal heating system is an electrically powered system that uses the earth's energy to heat and
cool your home. A geothermal system transfers heat from the earth to your home
using a circulating underground loop system. This system consists of a heat pump
that connects to underground pipes. A water based solution circulates
through underground pipes, this solution then carries the heat from the
ground into your home.

However your geothermal system will pay for itself within a few years, and
will be enormously cheaper to operate. Also by installing a geothermal
system you eligible for federal tax credits up to $3,500.

Types of Closed Loop Systems
The most popular type of geothermal system is a closed loop system. A
closed loop system means the fluid filled piping is buried underground near
your home or business. The fluid is constantly absorbing heat from the earth
than distributing that heat inside your
home. During the warmer months, that same fluid takes the heat from
indoors and distributes back into earth cooling your home.
Horizontal loop system is generally used when there is
enough land that isn't too rocky to trench. Most often a horizontal loop
system is installed during a new construction of a home or office building.
Vertical loop systems are installed when the land is
limited, too rocky to trench, or for existing buildings and homes. Piping
is buried into the ground vertically about 150 to 250 feet below ground.
Slinky coil loop system is becoming very popular with
residential customers. This system requires less land and less
trenching, which is much easier to install. A coil of tubing is placed
into a trench overlapped and than buried. This allows heat to transfer
in smaller volumes.
Pond loop is not as common, but is becoming increasingly
popular. A pond loop system consists of coils of pipe at the bottom of
a pond or some type of water source. The pond loop system then extracts or
expels heat into the water supply as needed.
